Adventures in Buddhism @ The Guang Ming Temple

This weekend was one of those great weekends where I planned nothing and did a little bit of everything. It kicked off with a cool spiritual adventure on Friday night. I was invited to join the open house being hosted for some University students at the local Buddhist Temple. While it was not my first time there, I had a great time learning all about the different services they offer. My friend who invited me along was once my professor at the college the event was with, she is now one of my closest friends. After touring the temple and eating delicious Chinese food we took some time to reflect on Buddhism and the life of Buddha. She shared that one of the things she admires most about Buddha’s story is the teachings behind the middle path. Buddha, a prince, born with all the excesses afforded to royalty thrust himself into extreme poverty once realizing that the world was a different place beyond the palace walls. It is said he sustained himself with one grain of rice a day for a while, he didn’t want everything, he didn’t want nothing. Eventually his journey led him to create the teachings behind the middle path. A life lived in balance, not too much and not too little, is his secret to finding happiness. During the tour one of the monks asked us to take this one thing, if we are to take anything from Buddhism. “In Buddhism there is no good, no bad, just your mind” oh yes, a mind is a terrible thing to waste!
